How to Install an eSIM
- Setup
Before you start
You need an eSIM-capable phone, a stable internet connection, and the QR code or activation details from your provider. Install the eSIM while you still have Wi-Fi at home, but do not switch it on for data until you arrive, unless your provider says otherwise. Most travel plans start counting when they first connect to a network in the destination.
Install with a QR code
- Make sure your phone is connected to the internet.
- Open Settings and find the cellular or mobile data section.
- Choose Add eSIM or Add cellular plan.
- Scan the QR code provided by your provider.
- Follow the prompts to label the plan, for example “Travel data”.
- Leave the eSIM switched off, or set it not to use data, until you arrive.
Install manually
If you cannot scan the QR code, choose the manual option and enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code your provider supplied. The labels vary by phone, but the flow is the same: add a plan, enter the details, then save it.
Switch it on when you arrive
- Turn off airplane mode and wait for the phone to register.
- In cellular settings, set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM if your provider requires it. This is normal for travel eSIMs and does not mean you are roaming on your home plan.
- Keep your home SIM active for calls and messages, but set it not to use data.
Troubleshooting
- No service. Check that the eSIM is turned on, data roaming is enabled for it, and it is selected as the data line. Restart the phone and try again.
- The QR code will not scan. Use the manual installation details instead.
- It says the eSIM is already installed. Remove the plan and reinstall, or contact the provider for a fresh code.
- Data does not work. Confirm the plan has activated and that you are within the covered destination, then check the provider’s APN instructions.
If problems persist, the provider’s support channel is the fastest route, since they can see whether the plan has activated on their side.
