How to Use an eSIM on Android

  • Devices

Checking compatibility

Android eSIM support depends on the manufacturer and model, not on Android itself. The menu names differ between Samsung, Google, Xiaomi and others, but the concept is the same. Open Settings and search for “eSIM”, or look for Network & internet → SIMs, Connections → SIM manager, or Mobile network → Add eSIM. If your phone offers to add a plan by scanning a QR code, it supports eSIM.

Installing a travel eSIM

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and install before you travel.
  2. Open the SIM settings and choose Add eSIM or Download a SIM instead.
  3. Scan the QR code from your provider, or enter the activation details manually.
  4. Name the plan so you can identify it later.
  5. Leave it switched off for data until you arrive, unless the provider says otherwise.

Choosing which SIM handles data

Android lets you set a preferred SIM for mobile data, calls and SMS separately.

  • Set the travel eSIM as the SIM for mobile data.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls and SMS if you want to receive verification codes.
  • Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM, and disable it on your home SIM.

Some manufacturers label these options slightly differently, but the split between “mobile data”, “calls” and “SMS” is consistent.

Troubleshooting

  • “eSIM not supported”. The phone model likely lacks eSIM hardware; there is no software workaround.
  • No connection after landing. Restart the phone, confirm the eSIM is selected for data, and check that data roaming is on for that line.
  • QR code rejected. Request a new code or use manual activation details.
  • APN issues. Some providers require a specific access point name; follow their setup guide if data connects but does not load.

If you change phones, you generally need a new eSIM, since most travel eSIMs cannot be transferred between devices.
