How to Use an eSIM on iPhone

Does your iPhone support eSIM?

Most recent iPhone models support eSIM. Exactly which models support eSIM (and whether they support two active eSIMs) varies by model and region, and some models sold in certain markets ship without a physical SIM tray. The most reliable check is your own device: open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) and look for Add eSIM or Add cellular plan. If the option is there, your phone supports eSIM.

Adding a travel eSIM

  1. Install while connected to Wi-Fi, before you travel.
  2. Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.
  3. Scan the provider’s QR code, or choose to enter details manually.
  4. Label the plan, for example “Travel”, so you can tell it apart from your home line.
  5. Choose what the new line is used for. For a data-only travel plan, set it as the data line and leave calls and messages on your home SIM.

Managing two lines

iPhone lets you choose separate defaults for data, voice, and messages. A common setup for travel is:

  • Mobile data: travel eSIM
  • Default voice line: home SIM
  • Default messaging line: home SIM

This keeps your number active for verification codes while data runs on the local network. Incoming calls to your home number may still incur roaming charges depending on your home plan, so check with your carrier.

Data roaming and activation

For most travel eSIMs you enable Data Roaming on the travel line only. This is what lets the eSIM attach to a local network. Turn roaming off for your home line so it does not use expensive roaming data.

Troubleshooting

  • The QR code fails. Use manual entry with the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
  • No data on the travel line. Confirm it is selected as the data line and that data roaming is on for it.
  • You cannot find the eSIM. Check Settings → Cellular for the saved plan; if it is missing, reinstall it from the provider’s instructions.
  • You want to keep the eSIM for another trip. Leave it installed but switched off to avoid accidental charges, or delete it once you are sure you are done.
